RIAA Grabs Student's Life's Savings [Slashdot]

Yeah I know this is from my nemisis Slashdot but oh well.

The gist of this is that the RIAA sued this kid for creating a search engine at his college campus.  He had made no claims it was for music stealing.  The RIAA decided to be nice, they settled.  The only thing they took was his entire $12,000 life savings.  That's just fucking harsh and a move that robbed the last bit of credibility this orginization had which wasn't much.  I think Google and MSN need to watch out.  I mean maybe 30 or 40 songs could have been swapped in a day on this kids search engine, but think of what could happen on Google.  On top of it Google has profits, not a savings account to rob.  Yeah these guys care about the music buyers and the artists, I'm not buyin it anymore.

In a related note I hoped over to his site and donated $20 to the kid to help rebuild his savings.  No wonder the tech industry is in a slump, you write a freakin search engine these days and the music industry sues you.  Maybe I won't buy the new Metallica album even though I want to support the band.  Metallica could afford to get out of their grasps.  If they WANT to associate with the RIAA fuck em, they get no money.  They can just take my $12 out of this kids savings.
