Tom Coates on Weblog Culture. Tom Coates of plasticbag, writes about the challenges to weblogging culture being caused by scale:

The real growth area in the next five years will be in these contextualising tools ... A future weblogging culture should be able to find counterpoints to arguments, to identify experts quickly and easily, and it should help good commentary bubble up effectively from new or low-trafficked sites. Mechanisms that help us know who to read, who to trust and who to ignore should be permeating the entire community invisibly and pervasively.

X1 - Great download.

From John Robb, a terrific product recommendation:

Bill Gross has finally launched X1, his fast search tool on the desktop (Web, e-mail, files, and attachments). There is a full-featured, no time limit, free version available. This is a good replacement for the hideous search feature in Outlook.

I just installed X1, and so far it looks terrific. Thanks John!

Ed Cone is doing a great job of covering the weblog usages in the campaign this season.

Weblogs can turn campaigns into conversations, and David Hoggard is getting plenty of feedback. How he handles the sometimes heated discussion will say a lot about his potential as a council member...

...meanwhile, the John Edwards weblog reports on his decision to ditch his Senate seat and focus on a run for the White House...

...and the WSJ runs a (subscribers-only) column on the Dean campaign's use of the Web, including the strategy for snuffing out negative posts: donors give each time someone trolls, until the troll figures out he's actually making money for Dean through his flames and goes away.
