The TiVo channel guide is soooooo superior to the Digital Cable guide (which as a GCI employee, that judgement is somewhat difficult to pronounce). The TiVo guide layout provides the usual list of channels but then off to the side, the highlighted channel's lineup for the next twelve hours is displayed. Very handy.

Right now we're recording three episodes of the Sopranos for Seth. We also signed up for a Season's Pass for the Sopranos. A Season's Pass will record all the episodes it can find of a certain program. It is smart enough to not record repeats if you've already recorded the episode the first time around.

graphicMajor TiVo update!

Because we couldn't stand to wait until Monday when the Ethernet-USB adapter is scheduled to arrive, we stopped by good ol' Radio Shack and picked up a Phonex PX 441 Wireless Modem Jack (WMJ). Evidently the Wireless Modem jack can sometimes help correct noisy phone line problems.

We hurried home, set-up the WMJ and after one abortive effort (I had not correctly completed the WMJ setup) we had lift-off. Our cheering could be heard around the world!

So currently we're in the middle of a 30 minute download of programming information.

One comment regarding the name Wireless Modem Jack. Wireless implies a through-the-air wireless connection - something along the lines of 802.11b. However, that's not what happens at all. Instead the data is moved through the electrical wiring - it's not through the air at all. The base station is plugged into an electrical outlet. A phone cord from a phone jack is plugged into the base station. The expansion base station is plugged into an outlet close to TiVo. A phone cord runs from TiVo to the expansion base. It's my guess that it uses the HomePlug standard.

One small disappointment is that the overall geek quotient is significantly less than if we used the TiVo USB port and a wireless bridge. However, a working bird in hand is worth two geeky birds in the bush.

Here it is Saturday morning and we're watching the Eagles-Giants game. Mom just called to tell us that their TiVo not only does replay but it can do slo-mo replay. Peter replied that our TiVo does no-mo.
