Lately, I've been somewhat obsessively listening to the 1999 remastered recording of Benny Goodman's landmark 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall. I just have to say that Harry James is THE BOMB - his solo rides on Sing, Sing, Sing and Bei Mir Du Schoen are so hot. He lets it rip and ride and his technique is flawless. No one plays trumpet like that anymore.
Gene Krupa is also pretty darn impressive. It's hard to believe that anyone was playing drums like than in 1938 - he'd blow away any rock drummer today. It's funny though - what I like best is his THUMP THUMP THUMP on the base drum. He's just so full of chutzpah. What a player.
Those guys could swing.
