Well I am still searching for a good nightly sleep medication that, to be blunt, doesn't fuck me over in one way or another. And last night, I had a crappy experience with Melatonin.

Last week, with some forethought, I decided to give Melatonin a whirl. I purchased a synthetic (very important that it be synthetic - animal extracts can contain viruses) Melatonin from Wallmart. The tablets were 3 mcg. Since I'm so sensitive to drugs, I started out Friday night at a half a pill and then because I still felt groggy, dropped to a quarter of a pill on Saturday night.

It worked o.k. - I got to sleep a little easier and slept ok. Not great - but a tad better. However, this morning I could not get out of bed. I was drugged beyond belief. I slept until Noon - and even then I could barely stagger out of bed.

It appears to me as if there's a cumulative effect with Melatonin. But guess what? Because Melatonin is a supplement and has not gone through the FDA approval process, there are very few studies or trials. As a result, there's not much available info on side effects. And, in my research I discovered that because Melatonin is an unregulated supplement, purity cannot be guaranteed and is in fact quite spotty.

So, I will no longer take Melatonin. And I will not take an over-the-counter unregulated supplement again. What a total dangerous racket it all is....It really pisses me off.

This is soooooooo true - especially for us Chronic Fatigue types!

Note: I wish the New Yorker had a program for us bloggers that would allow access to their cartoons at a reasonable price. Because they charge $60 a pop, if a humble blogger wants to use a New Yorker cartoon, one either does not use it or steals it (with a little effort) like I just did.
