Tonight, the Ski Boy and I were at a very special wine tasting dinner hosted by our friend Mary Langdon (Auntie to Trajan Langdon - Alaska is such a small town). The featured wines are, of all things - who knew they existed - sparkling red wines. Our sparklers are from Australia:
- Yalumba 1996 Barossa Sparkling Wine "D Black 96 -4." A very surprising wine. I can't believe what a cab-shiraz sparkling wine tastes like - oak, tanin, somewhat sweet, and then fizz! A very well made wine.
- Rumball (non-vinatage) Sparkling Shiraz. I like the Yalumba better. I don't think Shiraz stands up to sparkling as well as a Cab-Shiraz blend. I can taste Shiraz but it gets overpowered by the fizz.
- Chandon (non-vintage) Pinot Shiraz. This puppy is very interesting - the grapes are very present - thick shiraz and pinot. This one may be my favorite. And, I didn't know that Chandon had Aussie properties. But as Mary's Mom, Thelma, stated, where there are grapes, there is Chandon.
We're all in agreement: Who knew that there was such a thing as Red Sparkling Wines?
Note: The Aussie wine web sites are waaaayyyyy better than the American and French web sites!
