My invitation to the kan'okai (cherry-blossom viewing party) in the Naval Base arrived in the post this morning. This is the second time I've been invited, last year's pictures are here.
There can be few places in Japan where such an event takes place. Of course there are any number of hanami during the cherry-blossom season; sometimes it seems that any open space with even a vaguely pink-looking tree is engulfed in a sea of blue plastic and sake. But the kan'okai in the Naval Base is in a whole different class; it's like nothing more than a traditional English garden party. And moreover, it being April, there's even a chill in the evening air reminiscent of an English summer evening.
I'm looking forward to April 5th.
