Broadcasting to an audience of three (and a goldfish)... Comment, ramblings and musings... life through the eyes of a Japanologist...

Went to the ceremony for the first years at one of the elementary schools. The six-year-olds were all dressed in their best clothes, and they all looked cute and full of promise, eager to begin their studies. I wonder how different the reality will be? One of the schools this year had a grand total of... no first years. Not even one. The lack of children is a problem throughout Japan, but it seems to be a problem especially on an island like this, where there is always a temptation for young families to move to the mainland. Something needs to happen- or be done- soon if there isn't to be trouble in the future, I think.

Dice with death

Invigorating it might be; peaceful it certainly isn't. My office, the most cramped in the building, has 11 people squashed into it, but with people moving in and out, and all the transferring of files and desk-drawer-contents that entails, the place was even more like Piccadilly Circus than normal.
I just sat back, relaxed, and watched the chaos...

The first day of the new academic and financial year here- and with it, a new order in the office. It's slightly odd that people with whom I've been working for at least a year, and in one case for nearly four years, are no longer around. On the other hand, though, it's good to get a fresh start, and with the influx of new people I feel invigorated and inspired to ganbaru for another year. I've got lots of new ideas- one of the best things about this job is the fact that I can basically make my own work- so I'm looking forward to being able to implement some of them.
