Seeing the koi-nobori made me think, but in some strange way, the way that the year is punctuated with rituals and festivals- occurring year after year after year- is strangely comforting...     

It's amazing how quickly a year passes. Driving back from one of the elementary schools, I saw a huge koi-nobori outside a house, my first of the year. (My first koi-nobori, not my first house!) Koi-nobori are huge carp-shaped streamers hung from a tall pole to catch the breeze. They celebrate Children's Day, on May 5th, and as such are generally only seen at houses with young boys.
