At the taiko practice, Otsu-kun, one of the elementary school students who played taiko with us in the main town festival two years ago, turned up for practice. Obviously he's one of 'my' students, so he stuck pretty close to me for the whole practice. Anyway, he couldn't believe that it was possible to speak to England from a mobile phone, so to prove to him that it was indeed possible, I phoned my sister, and got her to say 'hello' to him. The look on his face when he got to speak to a real English person (I don't count!), and moreover a real English person in England was a picture!

Tonight was the penultimate taiko practice before the festival; one slightly sour note was struck when Nakatani-san went off in a huff because he couldn't get to play the taiko. We'd practiced up at the shrine earlier in the week, which meant that there was only one taiko left at the kominkan, and everytime I was going to stop for a rest Nakatani-san was either smoking or was nowhere to be seen, so I ended up playing for most of the evening. However, Nakatani-san ignored the fact that he'd had plenty of chances to take his turn but missed them all, and stalked off home early, in a sulk. He's like this all the time, though, so nobody really took any notice...

Just in time for the weekend (not that I'll have any free time this weekend), the two P.D.James books I ordered from Amazon arrived tonight. I've become speaking acquaintances with the delivery man, he comes to my door so often!

Web sites worthy of mention...
But she's a girl From the 'About' panel of the site, 'This weblog is intended to be a view of the world from the perspective of a female scientist and geek. Generally, I'll share stuff that seems interesting to me (at least), from the web, the media, music, films and perhaps even from my own life, if I ever get one.' Anyway, it's a good read, and it's nice to see someone from Oxford on the web...

First visit of the term to Akizuki Elementary School. This school only asks me to go two or three times a term, which is fine by me, because for some reason, the children never seem to pay attention to, or be interested in, my lesson, no matter what I do.

As the time approaches for the five Japanese kidnapped by North Korea to leave Japan after their visit, their families have demanded that they should not have to go back, as the Electronic Telegraph reports. An understandable point of view, to be sure, but what will happen to the families the five have left behind in North Korea, I wonder?- there are already suggestions that they've been left behind as hostages to ensure that the five abductees don't remain permanently in Japan. Even if this isn't the case, it's still pretty likely that life for the families in a regime like that in North Korea won't exactly be a picnic if the five abductees don't return...
