Final lesson of the year at Etajima Elementary School after lunch today. With both the third-years and the fourth-years, we made Christmas trees. Both groups did well, but- as I realise every time I take these classes- there's a huge difference between the third- and fourth-years in terms of how grown-up the children seem. With the third-years, sometimes it feels like I'm dealing with babies, but the fourth-years are much more independent and capable. That's not to say that there are no difficult children in the fourth-years, though... During the third-year lesson, I noticed one of the boys who'd come to the previous International Club event, and so I went over and commented that it was a shame that he wasn't able to come to the Christmas event. At this, he looked at me as if I was completely crazy, and said that, given that he'd sent in the form, he'd be there... it turned out that two of the third-years had sent in the forms, but they'd not arrived on my desk, and moreover the Deputy Headmistress had stated that there had been no applications. Which, of course, raised the question, 'What about the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-years?' The easiest way- the only sure way- was to go to each class and ask, so I did- and found three more children, all from the fourth-years. So, in total, fourteen participants for the Christmas event, which somehow sounds like a far greater number than nine. I can't help wondering what would have happened if I hadn't have made that comment, though...

Having phoned each of the elementary schools to check that all of the applications for the Christmas event had been sent to me, I worked out that we had nine people coming. It's fewer than I hoped for- there's nobody coming from Etajima Elementary School at all- but on the other hand, a small group is much easier to deal with, especially when doing crafts. It also makes the preparations simpler, too.

Another Friday 13th. It seems that there have been quite a few of them this year. Anyway, I like these days; we get paid two days early!
