Japan A-Z

The 'U-turn rush'- when people return to the cities after going home for the New Year break- is in full swing, according to an report on the news this evening. It really isn't pleasant to travel at this time of the year, primarily because the rest of Japan also seems to be travelling on the same train. For example, the news report mentioned that the unreserved carriages of the Tokaido Shinkansen were up to 180% full- in other words, some carriages were not far off carrying as many passengers standing as sittting down!
