What I did today
Today, I...
- Got my 2000th page hit for the Breakfast Show;
- Went to Kure to meet Date-kun (a friend from Hiroshima University) and his wife for dinner;
- Ate far, far, far too much at the American Base in Kure;
- Walked all the way back to Kure station, and still felt full (too full!);
- Caught the final ferry back to Etajima;
- Considered stopping off at Mejiro, but decided I still felt much too full.

Japan A-Z
Takarabune
Takarabune means 'treasure ship', and refers to the ship on which the Shichifukujin (the Seven Deities of Good Fortune) are said to enter port on New Year's Eve to bring happiness to everybody. Takarabune pictures and decorations are one of the ornaments used at New Year for good luck.

It's probably wishful thinking, but I'm sure that today I felt the first tentative hint of spring. The very air was suffused with softness, the slightest of breezes brought the most delicate of fragrances, of early flowers and of springtime itself; and the duck-egg-blue sky had none of the harshness of mid-winter. It would have been a perfect day for a good cup of coffee, the sun-warmed steps leading down to the sea in Washibe Harbour, and an absorbing book, if only I'd realised earlier.

In the afternoon, I went across to Kure to meet Date-kun and his wife, and we went to the American Base together for dinner. We ordered three starters, and then (because Date-kun's wife was so eager) we ordered steaks; I went for a 16-oz hamburger steak. Well, the one thing you can say about the food in the base's restaurant is that the portions aren't small. To be honest, in hindsight the starters alone would have been adequate. So when my hamburger arrived, about the size of a small car, I knew there and then that I wasn't going to finish it. And I was right. Despite several strolls outside, in the end I left about a quarter. I did manage the slice of cheesecake the chef brought the three of us, though... As we left the base, I couldn't face a bus ride back into Kure, so we decided to walk back into town. It was a fine evening, and the walk wasn't unpleasant; there were some fine night views of Kure. We went for coffee at the railway station (Kure at nine o'clock on a Saturday night is like a ghost town; there was nowhere else open), and then strolled to the port for me to catch the final ferry back to Etajima. It was pleasant to see Date-kun and his wife again. Date-kun commented that we should meet every month, alternately in Etajima and Kure; it'll be interesting to see if this happens, and good if it does.
