What I did today
Today, I...
- Prepared three songs for my first school visit of the year;
- Got a pleasant surprise when I got 3500 yen back from the shinnenkai last night- even after going for drinks afterwards!
- Went to Koyo Elementary School;
- Got home, and made hotcakes for the first time in ages;
- Intended to update the Breakfast Show, but watched television instead.

My first school visit of the year was to Koyo Elementary School. I only have three visits to this school this term, so the Japanese teachers and I decided to use the limited time available to make a CD of English songs with the children. With three visits, and three classes per visit, we should be able to get nine English songs, and then at least some of the songs have Japanese equivalents, so with luck we should get fifteen or so songs in total. Anyway, for the first lessons I chose songs which were fun, and which had actions or games associated with them. With the third- and fourth-years we did 'London Bridge', with the fifths we did 'Old MacDonald', and with the sixths we did 'If you're happy and you know it'. The thirds and fourths managed pretty well, and had a great time with the human tug-of-war we did after the normal 'London Bridge' game. The fifths, too, weren't bad (although not as genki as they normally are); they weren't too confident about animal noises, though! The sixths, meanwhile, managed to make 'If you're happy and you know it' sound like something that would be sung at a funeral. I think that their age (they're at the stage where everything and anything is mendokusai- too much trouble), and the fact that the boys tend to mess around and then admit later that they haven't understood (for which, read 'listened to') a thing, means that trying to do songs with them isn't the best idea ever. There are three or four children who are really enthusiastic about English, though (they even come to my adult course in Koyo Community Centre!), and they really carried the lesson. I ate lunch with the third years, and then afterwards I went for a stroll in the playground, and ended up playing oni-gokko- tag- with the third-year boys. They were great fun- they all decided that whoever became the oni would chase me. Hmmm. None of them quite knew what to do when, instead of running away, I made a fierce face and ran after them instead!
