Warren Buffet: "CEO's don't need 'independent' directors, oversight committees or auditors absolutely free of conflicts of interest. They simply need to do what's right." [by way of Scripting News]
Cicero was into the republican virtue thing as well. The republic may be saved by shoring up the character of its constituents. He ended up dead as the Roman republic crumbled under the second triumvirate, his faithful disciple Octavianus, later Augustus Cæsar, signing the order calling for his death, on Marcus Antonius’s request. Virtue is well and good, but it must be shored up with mechanisms ensuring good behavior, or at least consequences for bad behavior.
