Huh. I missed this completely:
R. A. Lafferty died 20 March 2002 at the age of 87. He was the author of many science fiction novels and shorter works, and won the Hugo for his short story "Eurema's Dam." He also had several other Hugo and Nebula nominations. In 1990, Lafferty received a World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award. [by way of the rec.arts.sf.written FAQ]
One of my favorite writers, one with a whimsical bent. Often as I am reading his works I think of an open-faced Irish teller of tales holding forth. Yet another author I wish I could have met while alive.
