This is the book that got the whole patterns mania going, even though it has nothing to do with computers or software. It's about architecture. But, the thought processes are explained and they can be ascribed to most any discipline. As I recall, the first real patterns book was Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, John Vlissides. Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software. Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series, Addison-Wesley, Reading Mass.1994. It's usually listed as authored by Gamma, et al. There are no doubt multitudes of patterns books out now, but this was the first.

Many years ago, a family friend suggested I read a book on a new thing called "patterns." It was a book that looked at nature and found commonality in things that one would expect to be completely unrelated. Unfortunately, I didn't read the book (only borrowed it for a couple of months). A couple of years later I found myself not being "in the know" on patterns. While I see the value in repeatable solutions, I think some people take it to an extreem. An article on the topic in Java Developers Journal seems to feel the same.

Dr Peter Denning has an article on the Somatic Engineer. An article that discusses understanding the true needs and values of others and systems. By tuning into others, we can better connect...and by connecting, better understand...and by understanding, better help.

Bill Bumgarner has long owned the domain "friday.com" You would think it would be worth lots of money, right? Well obviously during the internet boom nobody broke down and made Bill "feel like he won the lottery" so he still owns the domain. Why do I bring this up? Because the consulting arm (business management and technology) of PwC is splitting off. And they decided to name the company after a day of the week... is Bill going to be rich? No, they picked Monday. Not sure that is such a great name.
