One way to thwart worms and their ilk is to run an uncommon operating system. Currently that means anything but Windows. Monoculture in the OS world has resulted in widespread epidemics like the one we have seen recently. Run a rare OS and that fact alone may prevent disaster. Add to that the fact the better security awareness within the Linux and FreeBSD camps and you have a less vulnerable target. These machines are by no means fortresses. I should know: my Cobalt RaQ was rooted. Twice. There too the monoculture of RaQ's was the reason. My machine was at a service provider who had racks and racks of those machines. I've learnt my lesson and moved on.
