TechNews.com: Hewlett-Packard Co.'s printing and imaging business has been such a moneymaker for so long that many observers thought that division's mandate was simply to not mess it up.
Three months ago, the company messed with it. Gone were the old putty-colored, boxy printers, replaced by curvier, blue- and silver-hued ones that let people edit and print their images without a computer acting as the intermediary.
Company officials said that within 45 days of the product releases they saw results. In HP's most recent quarter, which ended July 31, its printing and imaging business posted a 10 percent increase in revenue compared with the same period a year earlier, but its other businesses -- such as personal computers, servers and consulting services -- saw their sales fall.
Now the trick is for the company to figure out how to make that sort of innovation happen in its other divisions as it tries to absorb its nearly four-month-old, $18.9 billion acquisition of rival Compaq Computer Corp.

Based on the public numbers, PC's and computers of almost any kind need serious help. It's hard to believe that the server market is so tough for us business-wise. We've got good stuff from both HP and Compaq sides of the house. It just doesn't make sense.
