HP hires seminal computer thinker. Hewlett-Packard Laboratories hires Alan Kay, who helped invent major computing technologies such as object-oriented programming and the predecessor to modern graphical interfaces. [CNET News.com]
I hope they do better with him than what they did with Bruce Perens. Perens, long known for his open-source views, was hired by HP to evangelize and educate HP about open-source. The reasons for him leaving seem to differ on who you listen to.
I wonder how practical it is to hire a visionary when the rest of the company if suffering. Does a lot of blue-sky visioneering translate into real products even 10 years out? It almost seems *to me* that even Alan doesn't know what he's doing except promoting his own interests.
