Fire and Rain

1. Fire

There was something odd in the air. I sniffed about for a while and then walked into the bedroom where the smell was fairly strong.

"Do you guys smell anything?" I asked Don and Andy.

One of them looked in thru the hole in the wall where the window used to be. He had a blank look on his face.

"I smell something odd. Do you smell it?"

"Like a torch?" Don asked.

Andy poked his head into view and asked, "Yeah, like a torch?" and held up the torch they were using to get the old window panes out of the wall.

And they laughed. And I was relieved.

2. Rain

The day before had been brutally hot. Don and Andy decided to knock off early instead of working on the west side of the house just as the afternoon sun was beginning to beat down.

They came back in the morning. The air was cooler. The sky was filled with clouds.

"It'll never rain," I said.

After all, the creeks haven't run here in over two years. The temperatures have been in the 90s for more than a month. And the rain clouds always part just as they approach Oak Hill.

"It'll never rain."

Later that day, the clouds opened up, and we all got a laugh at my weather prediction abilities.

It rained an inch. The creeks are still bone dry.
