- Java generates a lot of posts.
- Posts on comp.lang.cobol peaked in 1999 and 2000 (remember W2K bug?!)
- Perl traffic is declining (maybe the documentation is so good that... :)

Also note that the average number of posts to the Ada, Forth, and Scheme newsgroups has generally been rising over the past several years - and check out that spike for Ruby!

Just renewed my ACM membership, which reminded me...more than once I've seen someone suggest a "hippocratic oath" for programmers (see this Slashdot posting for a recent example). ACM has had exactly this - a professional code of ethics and conduct - for a long time (my electronic copy of Horowitz and Sahni's Fundamentals of Data Structures, ninth printing circa 1981, has a copy of the Code of Conduct in an appendix).
