DVDs from Rotor Launch

According to this post on the dotnet-sscli mailing list, DVDs from the Rotor launch at MS Cambridge are now available on request. This should be fun - I was semi-mortified to find out after doing my bit on extending the JIT that I'd been recorded for posterity saying "this is cool shit!" - it kinda just got away from me :-) [Peter Drayton's Radio Weblog]

MC++ and IL Optimizations

Tomas agrees and also points out the weakness: the production of unverifiable code.

Not at all, actually. The MC++ compiler does indeed run the generated code thorugh the backend optimizer, doing some optimizations no other ms managed compiler does yet. BTW, Tomas was a Technical Reviewer on my Visual C++.NET book and was a huge resource!!

MC++ Perfomance

MC++ Performance.

In the interview with Herb Sutter at DevX, Sutter claims "In the .NET world, C++ is still the best-performing language for most development work.". When I read this I took it as PR but last night I noticed a similar opinion in in Richard Grimes' book Developing Applications with Visual Studio.NET: "...the C++ compiler performs some optimization on the IL it produces, so the code generated from the managed C++ compiler will perform better than code generated from C# or VB.NET.".

I've not not seen any mention of this elsewhere. Maybe its just a rumour put about by the VC++ team :-)

[BTW Grimes' book is a good introduction to NET development and using VS.NET. He covers a lot of material but in a very readable way.]

It's not PR. It has been my experience. As Peter and I agreed the other night on the phone, Managed C++ gets no respect-). The Grimes book is outstanding and highly recomended.
