Today, let's talk about a technology I almost forgot it existed: the low-speed dial-up connection.
I'm currently on vacation in Chios, an Aegean Greek island. And while I'm enjoying every minute of my stay, I also realize that I would not be able to publish a blog as specialized as mine if I was living there.
[Note: And while it seems like a small problem, it's also one of the reasons that the WTO Summit in Cancun ended in a clash. Not all countries are equal.]
Let me explain my publishing process.
In order to select one specific story every day when I'm in Paris, France, I browsed through lots of e-mails, I read many newsletters and I gathered tidbits from a news aggregator. I also read carefully many web sites the old-fashioned way because I prefer to see them in their entirety.
This represents lots of clicks and page reads. But it doesn't really matter with an always-on broadband connection.
With a low-speed modem connection, this is an entirely other story.
How could I read carefully 20 to 50 stories in my daily preselection to choose one? After this choice, how can I check other sources of information to know if this particular story is valuable or accurate? How can I find images to illustrate my summary -- or analysis -- to improve it?
The answer to these questions is obvious. I rely on a broadband connection to Internet, which I don't have here.
So don't expect to read a new story on this blog before the middle of next week. Anyway, I'm on vacation, and I should follow one of my old advises: relax and enjoy! See you next week.
