I recently spent two weeks of vacation in Lesvos, Greece, enjoying the end of 2003 and the beginning of 2004. This gave me the opportunity to write about some issues when you're far away from your usual broadband connection such as Wi-Fi access, traveling with tech gear or Internet access cards. But I had enough free time to take some photographs -- when rain decided to stop.
Before looking at these pictures, let me point you to this map of Lesvos.
I also want you to visit this website, "Lesvos: More then Just Another Greek Island," written by Matt Barrett. In fact, I jumped into the 21st century three years ago on Lesvos island just because I read it.
And don't miss his Greece Travel Guide if you ever plan to visit this country. Matt has been traveling or living in Greece since 1968, so he knows what can be helpful to travelers.
Now, let's start with the show.

This is Mytilini's harbor, the capital of the island, as seen from my hotel, the Blue Sea. And by the way, I want to thank all the hotel staff, who allowed me to use the hotel bar as my office during these two weeks. I also want to express my gratitude to the manager, Panagiotis Papageorgiou, who permitted me to use a private phone line. |

Skala Kallonis is one of my favorite places on the island. This is a fishermen' harbor, but it also has a beach and lots of restaurants. Of course, most of them were closed in this season. Here is a fisherman's boat on a cloudy day. |
I came back to Skala Kallonis several days later on a *very* cloudy day. |
Achladeri is not too far from Skala Kallonis. Here is the Ancient Pyrra's Tavern in Achladeri. |
Yera's gulf is also on the South of the island, but closer to Mytilini. Here is a small house on the edge of the water. |
Not too far from this small house, here is a smoking ouzo factory, still on Yera's Gulf |
Molyvos, or Mithymna as it is called now, is a fantastic town dominated by a Kastro (castle) built by the Byzantines and renovated by the Genoeses during the 14th century. Here is the Kastro as seen from the bottom of the city. |
Gavathas is another fishermen' village in the North. But the fishermen weren't there. |

Back in Skala Kallonis, I was able to catch a pelican while it was resting. It was so strange to be so close to this big *really* bird. |
There are plenty of other great places to discover in Lesvos, like Agiassos, Eressos or Plomari. But I didn't take any *good* pictures of these places during this trip.
A question remains. Will I ever return to Lesvos? It depends.
As you can see, I'm not sure there is a great future for computer guys like me on this island.
But there are still plenty of other ones. Check the pictures of my last stay in Chios for example.
