Doug Kaye describes some of the attributes of loosely and tightly coupled systems.  I wonder if it's fair to say that loosely coupled systems trade design and development time performance for runtime performance.  Many of the attributes Doug lists for loosely coupled systems traditionally incur a runtime performance penalty.
