I had started writing Civil War when I got a stuck saying what I wanted to say on the whole thing.   I did a "post" (as opposed to post and publish) while I gave it some consideration, and ultimately decided to delete the post and rewrite later, addressing what I really wanted to address: Erik Naggum's views on XML, and not get involved in telling people how to conduct themselves.  Radio had other plans, however, and the post not only didn't get deleted, it got published.  So Civil War stands, but I've updated it with the quotes from the post that I think represent the core arguments Naggum's making, including a case for binary serialization of XML.  I've been digging through the USENET archives looking for other posts on the same lines, and hopefully I can pull them together into some sort of aggregated form.  Erik has over the last couple years provided some strong arguments against XML and his writings have really made me think.
