Court to announce iPod decision Asked to decide on MP3 tax. Canadian Private Copying Collective seeks to appeal federal court decision.
The Supreme Court of Canada is set to announce today whether to hear arguments to revive a levy on iPods and other MP3 players.
A hidden levy currently applies to blank recording media, including 21 cents on blank CDs, 29 cents on cassettes and 77 cents on Minidiscs. The levy is collected by the Canadian Private Copying Collective, which distributes it to artists to compensate them for the copies consumers and music collectors make.
