Australian cleric's comments on rape trigger outrage
Globe and Mail, Canada - One of Australia's senior-most Islamic clerics has triggered outrage after comments reported Thursday comparing women who don't wear a headscarf to "uncovered meat" who invite rape.
Mr. Hilali was quoted in the Australian newspaper as saying in the sermon: "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside ... without cover, and the cats come to eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat's."
"The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred," he was quoted as saying, referring to the headdress worn by some Muslim women.

NEWS.com.au, Australia - "I unreservedly apologise to any woman who is offended by my comments," he said in a statement today.
"I had only intended to protect women's honour, something lost in The Australian presentation of my talk."
A spokesman for Sheik Hilaly said the backlash and criticism had badly affected him and he had been depressed and confined to bed all day, breathing with the assistance of an oxygen tank.
