Books
This will eventually be a list of books I'm in the process of reading or have read.
I got a bit sidetracked, I'm afraid, when I started to create an HTML page for this: see these weblog entries for details
For anyone who has every worked with me, the fact that I got sidetracked is pretty funny; over and over again I tell people to focus on the what of what you're trying to do, and not the how. Within 30 seconds of listening to someone describe something they want to do, computer people (and I'm one of the) always start mentally leaping to solutions.
Hmm, I could use a database for that. And maybe XML .. and I could put it all the web .. and what about an XML-RPC interface?
Whenever a tech person starts going down that path, I usually try to bring them back to basics: figure out what you're trying to accomplish, and do it the simplest way possible. Solve the immediate need first; don't propose a database and a GUI and come back in three months time with a demo.
I don't have an excuse, except to say that I'm doing this all for fun, and part of the point is in fact to get a chance to play with different pieces of technology. I'm mostly a manager these days by trade, so I certainly don't get a chance to build anything for pay.
So watch this space and see if I come up with anything. Or maybe I've shamed myself enough that I'll start doing something by hand. As best as I can tell, that's the way Ed Vielmetti does it, and if it's good enough for emv, it should be good enough for me.
