Civic Journalism

Jan Schaffer of the Pew Foundation is visiting Emerson this week to help the journalism department focus on the topic of "Civic Journalism." -- basically the idea that journalists should work with their communities to identify civic needs and help people do something about them, whether the problem is the quality of local schools or a complicated decision about waterfront land use. I'm especially impressed with the way she connects things to the potential of online interaction, citizens participating in stories, sharing information and creating a new kind of journalism.

The articles below will provide some background from Jan and others who were scheduled to be part of a panel discussion Thursday afternoon, before Thursday became "the day after Bush started bombing Iraq."
