I'm not sure how this "tagged with a meme" thing works,  but I'll assume that I shouldn't "tag back" Randy Neal of KnoxViews, the artist formerly known as South Knox Bubba, for including me on his "blogs that make me think" short list. He not only makes me think, he gives me stuff to think about, and now and then he makes me laugh out loud. (Hey, there's a list someone should start!)

And I'll assume I also shouldn't play "me too" and tag anyone Randy tagged, particularly Jack Lail's Random Mumblings.

Instead, I'll start with someone who made me think when he had a late-night talk show, now in a new medium... Anyone who browses my del.icio.us links probably could guess the rest of my list from the frequency with which I link to them and places they've pointed me to:
  • Dick Cavett, now blogging at The New York Times. (Hmm. Is that a blog, or a paperless newspaper column?) He was smart in the seventies, and he's still smart in his seventies. Even when his timing is a little off -- his piece about Don Imus -- he starts people thinking. (There are more than 200 comments on the Imus essay.) Among other things, his reappearance online got me thinking how lucky "my TV generation" was to enjoy  his idea of a late-night talk show instead of the current alternatives.

  • Mindy McAdams, who started out in "online journalism" on the team putting the Washington Post online and has been teaching students (and teachers) ever since.

  • Dave Winer, inventive software publisher, pioneer blog and podcast publisher, citizen journalist, critical reader of the news media, creator of Really Simple Syndication as we know it, and catalyst and magnet for many critical discussions.

  • Jay Rosen, author of PressThink, professor at NYU and instigator of the ambitious pro-am journalism project, NewAssignment.Net.

  • Paul Jones, who taught what was probably the planet's first Cybercasting class in 1995 at UNC Chapel Hill...  with me in the back row trying not to be distracted too much by leaping onto the net and exploring things he was talking about while he was talking about them.  He's still pointing out new things to think about and I still should be paying better attention.
I suspect those folks are already on someone's earlier "thinking blogger" lists, so they won't have to pick up the baton from me... In any case, the instructions are:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,

2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,

3. Optional: Proudly display the âo[breve]Thinking Blogger Awardâo[dot accent] with a link to the post that you wrote.
