Grants awarded to explore online future of journalism Congratulations to the following online journalists, educators, bloggers and Web developers, winners of project development funds from the Knight News Challenge competition. There are a lot of familiar names in here, but quite a few brand new ones too... plenty of summer mouse-clicking to see what they're all about. We're not talking lunch money here... A half dozen of the grants are for more than $500,000. The top one is ten times that. One of the grants means the Washington Post will lose online database-journalism whiz Adrian Holovaty, who hopes to help people answer the question "what's happening around me?" by creating open-source software to help them find (and act on) civic information about their neighborhoods. Meanwhile, a grant to Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism is aimed at creating more professionals like Holovaty -- with educations in both journalism an computer science.
