Congratulations to the following online journalists, educators, bloggers and Web developers, winners of project development funds from the Knight News Challenge competition. There are a lot of familiar names in here, but quite a few brand new ones too... plenty of summer mouse-clicking to see what they're all about.

We're not talking lunch money here... A half dozen of the grants are for more than $500,000. The top one is ten times that.

One of the grants means the Washington Post will lose online database-journalism whiz Adrian Holovaty, who hopes to help people answer the question "what's happening around me?" by creating open-source software to help them find (and act on) civic information about their neighborhoods. Meanwhile, a grant to Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism is aimed at creating more professionals like Holovaty -- with educations in both journalism an computer science.
