The last couple of days I am busy evaluating Content management systems, here some of my experiances.

Ektron

Low cost ca. 500$

http://www.ektron.com/

Experience

Downloaded the whole server , got a 30 day evaluation key. First I installed MDAC 2.6 , then installed the package. Installation went smooth.

After starting the browser pointing to the sample website, it seem to work.

Next I logged in using the admin account and tried to edit one of the pages. This resulted in an error message from the OLEDB provider claiming a update query needed to be used.

Then I tried to add a new page, first it had to download a activeX WYSIWYG editor, this took a minute or so. I opened in word the CSPNT product description which is a 13 page document, selected the entire document and pasted the content in the activeX editor. I got an option to clean the html generated by word which I accepted. Still all looked fine.

Now I tried saving the document, this failed with a document to big ??? error.

OK, I cancelled and tried to save a new small document, this time I got no error message but I also could not see the document in the contents list ??

So maybe something wrong with the database, I decided to install the jet engine just in case.

Again I first tried to edit a existing page, same result as before:

Error Type:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query.
/SampleASP/expscripts/edit.asp, line 162

Again tried to add a new page, same result as before.

21-8-2002  16:00 send a message to ektron support.

22-8-2002  12:30 still no answer but found the ODBC problem, it turned out the MDB file did not had the correct permissions. Pending problem is still the maximum size of data. So far its not looking good.

23-8-2002 13:25 still no support anwers.

So far my feeling is that we are not going to select this one.

SJ Merc interviews Janis Ian. "She credits Napster and its progeny with sparking renewed interest in her music, at a time when she can't be heard on contemporary-hit-obsessed radio stations. And she says her decision to offer free music downloads had done the opposite of what the industry predicts it would do: It caused a 300 percent spike in merchandise sales." [Scripting News]
