take a step back
i went to a great anti-war concert featuring chuck d, ani difranco and spearhead last friday.

someone once asked michael franti (spearhead) how one person can make a difference. he said he didn't know, but they can join with others, and together make a difference.

he shared this story about social change:

a butterfly, which lives 5 days, was asked, "have you ever seen this tree move?" "no," said the butterfly, "not in all my life have i ever seen this tree move. it must be dead!"

someone asked an 80 year-old man on the mountain, "have you ever seen this mountain move?" "no, and i've been here my entire life," he said, "it must be dead!"

the democracy is busy, please try again later
i've been trying the white house line for the last week, only to get a busy signal. one time i got through, but was on hold for a half-hour, and didn't have time to wait anymore. i hope this means that the white house has been flooded with people calling.

Speaking in Strings
Great documentary about violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Inspiring to watch this passionate, independent, and complex musician wrestle with her art and life.
