Sylvia Earle
Add to my 'women i admire' list. She has been diving since the 1950s, has lived underwater for weeks at a time, has a sea urchin (Diadema sylvie) and marine plant (Pilinia earli) named after her, and has dedicated her life to saving the ocean.

If the sea is sick, we'll feel it. If it dies, we die. Our future and the state of the oceans are one.

more on Sylvia

I interviewed her for the upcoming radio show I am working on. I am taking a look at the state of the ocean. And I can tell you, it's not looking good. We are fishing the ocean at a rate much faster than it can sustain. So many beautiful creatures gone forever. So many in trouble. Fins taken from sharks, then dumped back in the sea, suffering for weeks until it finally dies. Entire areas of the ocean trawled, taking the fish and destroying their habitat, which Earle says is the equivalent of bulldozing just to get the squirrels and birds. Anti-biotics for shrimp farming, pesticides from our farmlands creating entire dead-zones as they promote the growth of algae. Coral reefs dying. We have only explored about 5% of the ocean with areas more vast and as splendid as the Grand Canyon. Stayed tuned for the show, it will be coming out in about a month.
