Weblogs vs Usenet The more I think about it, the more it seems that a Weblog is basically like Usenet newsgroup, except that instead of being topic based, every poster gets their own newsgroup.
Using NNTP as a protocol for reading and updating blogs would have made a lot of sense.. I guess it's too late for that now. Problems that RSS is solving as new versions come along (like "payloads", and a way for a client to request only new items) were solved long ago in NNTP.
If a weblog were using NNTP we wouldn't need special tools for reading or posting - we'd just subscribe to a weblog like it was a newsgroup on a server, and we'd post using the same tool. Outlook Express would be the only tool you'd need.
