A glossary-like entry to try to "nail down" three ephemeral ideas mentioned in my entry Overstepping Our Bounds.

  • Bounds: a way of saying behind a wall of habituated seeing, doing and routines. The wall prevents seeing. The self-system is reduced to scanning for "significant" stimuli. Significant stimuli= those that initiate present routines.
  • Grasping: derived from Buddhist notion of constant grasping out of fear, out of insatiability. Graspingness at the center of various of the "sins", but in this context I am referring to an absence of being calm (at rest) an constant dissection of experience and of relationships to satisfy the drive to grasp more.
  • Embracing: as I think Buber did use term and as I interpret it's possible Buddhist and existential implications, is a psychological state that results from, is enabled by, a state of rest. A state of rest results from quelling of the grasping spirit for multiple moments. Quell the grasping spirit and the constant scanning for activation of present routines and you can SEE. See and you can embrace, rather than manipulate, your experience and those who approach you with shining eyes (good intentions).

  • I hope that clarifies sufficiently to provide a toehold for potential dialog.
