Background Information
I am new student in The Manager's Program at Kellogg and decided to return to school to develop my executive leadership skills. My ultimate goal is to become the Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. business unit of my company. To succeed, I will need to take our company from the silo mentality in which we currently operate to a knowledge-driven organization in which we harness the institutional knowledge of our more experienced members and encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of all of our members.
I am hoping that Jim McGee's Knowledge Management course will provide insight into how best to harness the institutional knowledge within my company. My company is currently entering a cycle that will allow us to take greater chances. If we can take our practical experiences and share them across the organziation, we can emerge a stronger, more efficient company that will be well-positioned for the next down turn. My goal is to develop a knowledge management system within my division that can be the blue print for the rest of the company.
As for my personal history, I graduated from law school in 1989 and practiced law for 6.5 years before accepting my current position with Zurich North America. I currently work in the Pollution Unit of the Claims Department; its not as ominous as it sounds. I manage a team of seven claims professionals and began an informal knowledge management session to teach the newer members of our department insurance coverage. We meet weekly to discuss unique coverage applications and to share our learning experiences with each other. I am hoping to expand this group beyond our department but am struggling with how best to expand the group.
