The most obvious solution, were it not for the various agreements entered into and Fiats iconic status in the Italian industrial landscape, would be an instant marriage of Fiat Auto and GM's European subsidiary, Opel. GM is heading for losses in Europe this year of over $500m, down some $300m, about half what Fiat Auto will lose. But as this week's protests and political wrangling have shown, closing surplus capacity in Italy is not easy. The same is true for Opel in its German heartland. Even a merged company would face a tough future. But at the moment, Fiat Auto has little future to speak of. The sooner Italians face up to that, the better.
