The sequencing of the human genome was a momentous occasion in genetics. What could be more momentous? How about sequencing the mouse genome? Researcher have announced just that [Nature][via ArsTechnica].

Early analyses confirm preliminary estimates on the similarity between the mouse and human genomes. Ninety-nine percent of human DNA matches that of mice, and the two genomes both contain an estimated 30,000 genes. Only 300 of the mice genes have no counterpart in the human genome and vice versa.

It is difficult to believe that 300 genes defines all of the difference between mice and men. However, if Stephen Wolfram is right, maybe evolution works with much simpler components than science has previously given it credit for.

A new invention could make the piano tuner's job obsolete. "An inventor, with classical piano training, has developed an electronic self tuning piano with no moving parts" [New Scientist][via ArsTechnica].
