PPS/NSF Urban Systemic Program Grant The National Science Foundation (NSF) selected Portland Public Schools to receive $3.2 million in grant funding from 2001-2004 to support the district's science and math programs. This grant enables PPS to sustain and deepen our efforts to improve instruction and achievement in mathematics and science and specifically to address the achievement gap in these areas. In the first year of this three year grant, we focused our efforts in four high schools, seven middle schools, and twenty elementary schools in the Jefferson, Madison, Marshall and Roosevelt clusters. The next year, two additional high schools (Franklin and Grant), six middle schools, and twelve elementary schools participated. This year, five high schools, seven middle schools, and 18 elementary schools are joining the grant.
The four objectives of the PPS Urban Systemic are:
- Higher achievement for all students; reduced disparities in enrollment and achievement between student populations
- Develop teacher and principal leadership in the areas of math and science
- Increase family/community outreach and engagement
- Develop more partnerships with higher education and business/ industry to support efforts to increase student achievement
To achieve our goals, the design of the grant includes a variety of strategies that can generally be grouped into four categories:
- Developing collegial learning communities within buildings that enable math and science teachers to observe each other's teaching and discuss student work
- Supporting teacher leaders within each building to facilitate these learning communities
- Provide direct student support
- Develop partnerships between schools and families/community groups and businesses
