Dog News: weird, inspiring dog tales
Dogs and other animals have emotions "Rescue dogs hunted for survivors of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. After a while, they found only bodies. They became visibly depressed, refusing to eat. Only after a live human was planted in the rubble for them to "rescue" did they shake off the blues and get back to work..." Our dog visited the vet yesterday for a followup on his knee injury. His vet suspects that Dao has an 'Anterior Cruciate Ligament' tear. So, our stoic little doggie has to get x-rays next week and then his surgeon will evaluate them. Of course, he must continue a strict regimen of total rest. His vet also said these kinds of injuries just do not heal well by themselves. Dao isn't overweight or old, just a dog with two total hip replacements... sigh, we should have gotten veterinary insurance...

Kitty's treatment gives her pause PA "Last April, Rosemary Moffett took a newly [adopted] cat -- which she renamed "Calie" -- to a PALS veterinarian, to get vaccinations. "I watched [her] give Calie a variety of shots. I even went back to her a couple of times because Calie was [sick] and was told that she was all right, that she didn't have worms." Unmollified, Moffett took the ailing cat to a vet in southwest Philadelphia, who confirmed her fears: "the cat had worms, and was given the wrong rabies vaccine..." After 8 days of sizzling hot weather, DC gets a break DC It's been so hot in the DC area that just walking seems a chore; imagine the poor dog, heavy coat or not, who does not have the ability to adapt to hot weather like humans do. Never lie to your dog If you want your dog to obey you, you must respect it. Respect is the cornerstone of Mary Ellen Walsh's dog training business. In her own words:
"Never lie to your dog. Never hit your dog and never ridicule your dog. Never give a command you’re not willing to back up. And the command ‘Come’ should always be in a pleasant voice. You’re building an emotional bank account with your dog from the second you get him. When you build trust, he’ll pay attention to you and respond to your wishes. It goes beyond obedience...” [News-Times]
I've learned that my dog will expect a treat if I promise him one. Yesterday, I told him I'd give him a "Frosty Paw" (dog ice-cream) before I realized we had none. So I had to improvise: I crushed some ice to a fine consistency, added a little unsalted chicken broth and a few slivers of non-fat chicken. He loved it and was more than satisfied with his fake Frosty Paw.
Online dog list compared to sex-offender registry IL "Pet owners in one Chicago suburb are howling mad over a plan to list the names and addresses of dogs that bite on the Internet." Animal Control says it's a good idea to allow people to know if such a dog lives next door... [News Channel 10, IL]

Mosquitoes (not dogs) are most deadly "In man's long war against [mosquitoes], the little bloodsuckers usually prevail. Mosquitoes kill more humans worldwide in five minutes than sharks do in a year..." oh great... "Mosquitoes will probably survive in a nuclear war..." In a world of uncertainty, the mosquitoe is actually a bigger threat than a terrorist attack. (nice to know that now that I've been chewed up by mosquitoes and we have the West Nile Virus in the DC area... ) [Miami Herald] Gee, I thought mosquitoes were insects, not animals...
Vet medicines can easily poison you! DC The pet industry is reviewing the way it sells antibiotics, due to "stupid human tricks": people who go to the pet store and self-prescribe themselves pet antibiotics for human ailments. In one case, a man took a fish antibiotic prescribed for fish "tail rot." He got sicker... "Some [antibiotics] may contain impurities or other substances that can be harmful to humans and their potency cannot be guaranteed.... Emergency room physicians say they occasionally treat people who have taken animal tranquilizers, pain medications or steroids, but these cases are rare..." [Washington Post] OK, that makes sense... after being chewed up by mosquito bites last night, a certain person used my dog's Hot Spot "Veterinarian's Best" Natural Care "itch relief spray." (oops) Well, it worked: This spray only contains "Tea Tree Oil, Chamomile and Aloe Vera and water" (and no steroids). It "provide relief from itching, scratching and sore skin caused by fleas and pollen allergy dermatitis and other skin problems." (ie, mosquito bites). A better idea: use Calamine... dog products aren't as well regulated... Arf!
Unemployed? Become a vet "Vets are in "red-hot" demand and that students out of school have four or five job offers upon graduation." Oh, and you'd better love animals... [Seattle Times]
Weird: dogs use bathroom, man must go outside CA In a twisted tale of elder abuse, a 91-year-old man's step-daughter married him, cleaned out his bank account and made him go outside for toliet duties while her rottweillers stayed inside:
"There were at least 100 dog feces in the back room where he showered," says Lauren Dills. "He had tried to shower that day but couldn't. The refrigerator was full of thick mold on the food, rotting, gross food." Wendi says she has no idea how her rottweilers got into the house during her absence. "It's a mystery what happened," she says. " . . . I didn't do anything wrong in not caring for him." ... Design your own Radioland theme: Paolo Valderman's store is open for US users, and it works like a charm; you go to the store, order it, and voila.... you have a license. I just spent the last four hours creating some custom icons for Dog News. His theme tool is supposed to be incredibly easy to use and if I succeed, then it definitely is.
You can also buy the RSS distiller and other tools, so you can take it easy while the distiller sorts through the news for you (I haven't bought it yet... probably should have done that first). If Dave Winer raves about it, it's gotta be really good.
I'm putting off redesigning the site until I feel competent enough, ie, I've read the documentation and tutorial thoroughly. The last time I tried to applied a customized theme (slightly modified Transmitter by Bryan Bell), I crashed Dog News and was down for a day (now that's a newbie for you). Lawrence saved my bacon, as usual (now that's service: I don't know how he does it; does he ever sleep? inquiring minds need to know. Does he have a life outside of Userland and Radioland.) Lawrence says the "best place to watch for all updates is with the Radio.root updates RSS feed:" at http://static.userland.com/updatelogs/Radio.xml
Dogs and supernormal senses We know that dogs have supernormal hearing. But is it also possible that dogs can sense brain waves? Just what are the limits of a dog's senses; has science seriously investigated the outer limits of a dog's ability to perceive its environment? Several articles published recently illustrate the supernormal abilities of dogs to predict immediate events, via their supernormal senses:
Miracle dog aids seizure-ridden girl "Chrissie the dog barks before Sandy seizures. Then the dog pinches a nerve in her hand to stops the shaking." (the dog was never trained to do this.) [WSAZ.com]
Fido's getting a charge from the phone Perhaps some dogs bark right before the phone rings because they can sense the changes in the electrical field which occur just prior to the phone ringing... [Arizona Republic]
It is also known that dogs and other animals act strangely just prior to earthquakes. Dogs are arson investigators, termite detectors, USDA investigators, and even cancer detectors. Wouldn't it be a hoot if dogs could do even more...
Is it art or is it roadkill? Dead dogs in art exhibit Chile "Animal rights activists in Chile are protesting against an artistic exhibition composed entirely of dead dogs. Antonio Becerro found the dogs dead on the streets of Santiago. He then stuffed them, painted on their fur and arranged them in different poses..." Becerro's hilarious dismissal of the animal rights activists protesting his art exhibition: "They are stupid and can get lost. It's not my problem that they can't think properly." Dog people vs. cat people Are dog people more loyal to their pets than cat people? Maybe... an informal poll seems to indicate that they are (perhaps not scientifically valid because the sampling of participants is self-selected). The study is revealing, however. "Dogs have owners; cats have staff," the saying goes. Perhaps that's why dog owners are more willing to spend large sums to save their pets. According to the latest Voice of Atlanta questionnaire, one in three dog owners would spend "whatever it took" on veterinary treatment to save their dogs. One in five cat owners made that claim..."
