Heroic war dogs may finally get a memorial More than 4,000 dogs served in Vietnam' many were killed in the line of duty; only 200 made it back to the United States. Those dogs who survived were usually euthanized by the US Military (as excess military equipment), or turned over to the Vietnamese Army, or abandoned altogether. While European countries have not hesitated to erect memorials in honor of the dogs who served in the line of duty, the U.S. has not done so. Some veterans are seeking to remedy the fate of their faithful companions who served with a memorial:

Hero dog's death spurs call to action. Buddy, the Alaskan lab who loyally stood by his owner's dead body for 12 days until found, was put down by Animal Control when he bit his new owner. Animal adoption that ends in such ways has much to do with new ownership training and adaptation of the dogs to new home and surroundings. "The Juneau society wants to use Buddy's tale to help people deal with problem pets. Donations will help start a pet behavior hot line and enhance services such as more postadoption follow-up and training for new owners..."

Animal Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association is accepting nominations for its newly launched Animal Hall of Fame. Call (425) 454-8381 for an entry form. Entries are due by Aug. 1, 2002. The winner will be announced during the WSVMA annual convention in Yakima, Sept. 28.
