If integrity is what you do when no one is looking, then pets are a good measure of basic civility - at least well behaved pets. Hungry as I am, should've already been in bed so I wouldn't notice so much, Snack looked appetizing as his namesake, greeting me as I came home tonight. I could have dined on Cat tonight, and none would be the wiser, and yet, inexplicably, against eons of cultural evolution (excluding the bastardizing influence of 24-hour grocery stores), my pet companions both still live.
