Do you have your social security number in your wallet or purse? Bad idea. Your social secuirty number is the key to identity theft because it is the one "not-so-public" piece of information that credit bureaus require in order to provide a credit report. A credit report, of course, is the first step to opening new accounts in your name, whether by you, or by an identity thief. For example, a social security number, along with a pre-approved credit offer from your trash might be all that is needed to make you a victim of identity theft.
