Pretexting - What is it?
It sounds like computer jargon, but actually, pretexting is a crime. It is the practice of getting your personal information under false pretenses, and, in many cases, it is the first step of identity theft
Here's an example. The pretexter calls, pretending to be taking a survey. You answer a few questions. Then, perhaps the person calls your bank, impersonating you, and convinces them using some of the personal information you provided. Before you know it, using a false pretext, this thief has gotten everything needed to open accounts in your name, submit changes of address, and to get false identification documents. More about pretexting.
