Starting at age 25 you should automatically receive (about 3 months before your birthday) a yearly statement from the Social Security administration. It lists the earnings they've posted to your record and the projected benefits for you and your family.
If you don't get a statement, download form 7004 to request it or call 1-800-772-1213.
On the statement, look for:
- Missing or incorrect earnings. (Earnings should agree with your W-2 or tax return for each year.)
- Incorrect or misspelled name.
- Incorrect date of birth.
Contact Social Security for any errors.
If you suspect someone is using your SSN, call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271. Also, be sure to check for signs of identity theft on your credit report.
