Identity theft can be a matter of asking or guessing
A University of Delaware student was charged with identity theft after breaking into the school's computer system and giving herself passing grades.
Actually, she got in to the system by posing as the teacher to call the personnel department, and simply asking for a new computer password. For a different teacher, she was able to get in just by guessing the password.
This isn't what we usually mean when we discuss identity theft, but it goes to show that somewhere, somehow, someone is probably not going to be as careful with your private information as they should be. And, in the case of easily-guessed passwords, it might be you!
