Common Names are a Common Credit Problem
If you have a common name, or you share the same name as your father and live at the same address, you have an increased chance that someone else's information is showing up on your credit report.
The credit bureaus attempt to match your file based on name, Social Security number, current address, former address, and date of birth, and the process is less than perfect. This is because there is no central authority that can be consulted as to what is the correct spelling of your name, etc. The information in Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union files comes from the companies you do business with, and to a certain extent, U.S. Post Office change of address notifications. If a clerk made an error when inputting your file, there's the chance that the error has gone onto your credit.
Helpful hints:
Check your credit report regularily from all three bureaus.
Use legible handwriting when submitting applications
Make sure the companies to whom you pay bills have the correct information.
Use only your given name when applying for credit or be consistent.
